Franklin Fish: Week 4
Well, that was a cold, rainy Saturday. Thank you to all who “weathered” the meet—especially our timers and stroke judges who were soaked! Our Frozen Franklin Fish won the meet 173 to 161.
The decision to end the meet early was in response to the shivering, blue-lipped children who were emerging from the pool. The temperature was within the guidelines (55º) but the wind picked up later in the meet and made us all miserable.
According to RMSL rules, if we swim event #45, we count the meet as an official meet and need to reschedule. Although rescheduling sounds lovely, it requires coordination from two teams and an HOA and is typically very difficult to facilitate.
Shout outs 🎉
We had 26 kiddos swim in their first Ben Franklin meet ever!
Coach shout-outs to:
- Jett Greene and Owen Burgess for being the 4th swimmer in relays for kiddos who wouldn’t have had a chance to swim in a relay otherwise.
- Sierra Haanen, Johanna Shepela, Lukas Shepela, & Daniel Fisher for helping out with the little kids these past 2 weeks.
Next Meet Sign-up is Open
This Saturday, June 10th, is our next meet at Homestead Farm II and meet declarations are open! You can sign up for up to 3 individual events and declare your relay availability here:
https://benfranklin.swimtopia.com/swim_meets/45616...
You must get your entries in by Wednesday at noon. Better yet: sign up now!
Fighting Fish Caps
We're continuing the Fighting Fish cap program again this year! If your swimmer enters each type of individual event available to them for their age group, they get an awesome looking swim cap.
And each year that they earn it, they earn a new color. You may have seen our veteran swimmers sporting silver, pink, & blue caps. That means those kids have swum every event for one, two, or three years, respectively.
Our brand new color is neon green. You may have even seen Coach Tyler showing off this new cap that fourth years can earn.
Your kid doesn't even need to swim the stroke legally—they can DQ all day long! We just want them to give every event a shot. It's a great way to encourage kids to try events they may shy away from (e.g. butterfly, individual medley).
You can find a list of the events by age group on the web site: https://benfranklin.swimtopia.com/fighting-fish
Regarding Relays
We build the fastest relays possible with the data we have on hand. We also try to swim as many relays as possible and use every swimmer in at least one relay. We frequently move swimmers up an age group to make this happen.
If your swimmer changes their mind about relays after Wednesday of each week, our coaches and parent reps scramble to rewrite relays. We do not have much flexibility to make changes after the declarations close.
Volunteer Shifts
We have all our shifts filled for the meet on Saturday. Thank you! You're awesome. If you need volunteer points, there are still shifts available for the remaining three meets of the season. You can also opt out of volunteering for $200. Just email me and let me know.
If you need help finding shifts, email me! I'm happy to help you find some.
-Ben
